The person who cordons off rail crossings with red and white barrier tape appears to have an easy job. As it happens though, the job of crossing keeper is a position that caries a lot of responsibility: the crossing keeper must prevent injury and damage to property at intersections between rail and road traffic. If the warning systems at rail crossings break down or engineering works are in progress at these locations, the crossing keeper takes charge and ensures that tracks and rail crossings can be negotiated safely. This demands maximum concentration on the task at hand. If a train is approaching, the crossing keeper receives the command and must close the road. |
